President Pranab Mukherjee announces e-tourist visas for Swedish nationals

India will soon extend e-Visa facility to Swedish nationals, President Pranab Mukherjee today said as he invited the Nordic country to be a part of government's flagship programmes like the 'Make in India' initiative.

Addressing a seminar in Stockholm on "India and Sweden: Co-creating a brighter future", Mr Mukherjee said, "If India and Sweden pooled their innovative energies to address the challenges that India faces, the solutions that they come up with may benefit not just the two countries but the whole world."

Ahead of the seminar, the President met the CEOs of the Swedish companies where he asked them to invest in India.

The CEOs told the President that they were eagerly awaiting the outcome of government's decision on Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The GST bill was introduced in Parliament and is at present pending before the standing committee.

The CEOs also told the President that they wanted to expand manufacturing base in India and make use of the programmes like 'Make in India' and also export to a third country from India.

During the seminar, Mr Mukherjee spoke about the changed political atmosphere in India and said "an atmosphere has been created which is business friendly" besides carrying out reforms in the policies.

He said India and Sweden have had traditionally warm and friendly relations based on shared commitment to multi-party democracy, an open society, freedom of expression, inclusive growth, an independent judicial system.

"I am pleased to inform you all that Sweden will feature in the list of countries to be soon granted the e-Tourist visa facility which would greatly facilitate travel for Swedish nationals who can come and explore 'Incredible India' with all its beauty, diversity, richness of culture, traditions, history and more," Mr Mukherjee said.

The facility will enable Swedish nationals to apply for Indian visa online, make payment for it and receive it through internet thus avoiding time consuming procedure of visiting the mission for travel documents.

"The coming together of India's large talent pool and technological and financial investments from Sweden can catapult our economic relationship to a new high. Sweden is among the leading innovative nations in the world. It has a culture of promoting innovations--and honouring them," he said.

Mr Mukherjee invited the Swedish industry to make full use of the new investment opportunities in India.

"Our regulatory regime today is becoming increasingly transparent, responsive and stable. The Government is working towards its vision of minimum government and maximum governance," Mr Mukherjee said.

The goal is to create one big market within India and to also make it easier to export from India. Manufacturing in India is set to become an un-missable opportunity--not only to meet the booming demand of the Indian consumers but also for producing cost-effective exports to third countries, he said.

The President said India is focusing on digital connectivity and use it to address the challenges faced by the country as it plans to build 100 smart cities by 2022.

Mr Mukherjee said all these programmes and priorities -- Make in India, Digital India, Smart Cities, Skill India and Green India -- are the building blocks of a brighter future of India-Sweden partnership because Sweden has strengths in all these areas.

"The three Ds of India - Democracy, Demography and Demand --should resonate strongly in Sweden, which has an ageing population and a small domestic market with an economy heavily oriented toward foreign trade and the largest number of multinational companies per capita in the world," he said.

Mr Mukherjee underlined the business relations between the two countries saying it was Ericsson brought manual switches and telephone systems to India in 1903.

China Welcomes PM Modi's e-tv (Electronic Tourist Visa) For It's Citizens

Visa on Arrival enabled by Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme is valid for visitors visiting India for the purpose of tourism, casual visit to meet friends or relatives, short duration medical treatment or a casual business travel. Initially when it was launched only 43 countries were included, gradually it went above 73 countries. Recently within past two months there has been a big add on in the list of countries eligible for e-tv. E-visa has been extended to Sri Lanka and China.

After overruling objections raised by its intelligence agencies and ofcourse the opposition parties India finally declared e-visa for Chinese Nationals on May 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Beijing last week approved this friendly gesture without further delay. RAW and IB favoured putting off the announcement until after the PM's visit, allowing India to assess China's willingness to reciprocate the measure. China on Monday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to extend electronic visas to its citizens and indicated Beijing was considering relaxation of visa laws for Indian citizens but stopped short of a reciprocal gesture. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular media briefing "We welcome this move of Mr. Narendra Modi". Hong said, "China is willing to make joint efforts with India under the Chinese laws and regulations so as to facilitate the exchanges of China and Indian people".

This decision was taken because as compared to India the chinese travellers are visiting Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives spending billions of dollars on their stay, sight seeing, shopping which is enhancing their tourism revenues. India is targetting around 100 million Chinese tourists who visited the neighbouring countries last year. The Indian travel industry will get enough time for marketing if the government lays down a roadmap for extending the e-visa to various countries. Prior information will make it convenient for tour operators to plan their marketing strategies. However, destination India is very competitive. "Given its cultural diversity, India as a tourist destination will always remain competitive. The country offers high-end hotel services which come with a price.

Observers said Modi's announcement was a personal gesture to put an end to decades old complaint about cumbersome and delayed visa procedures of the Indian government. Apart from China Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sri Lanka has extended the e-Tourist Visa scheme for the Sri Lankan citizens also, holding ordinary passport, starting from April 14, 2015.

The eTV will be for single-entry, and valid for only 30 days stay from the date of arrival in India. The eTV will be non-extendable, non-convertible and not valid for visiting Protected /Restricted and Cantonment Areas. E tourist visas for 31 more countries by June 15

The government is set to give a major push to the e-tourist visa scheme by extending it to 31 more countries and allowing foreign tourists to avail of the facility at seven more airports by June 15.

Among the countries that will benefit from the latest extension are the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, Malaysia, Tanzania and Argentina.

For travel industry experts, Modi is a 'breath of fresh air'

The airports to be added to the existing list of nine where foreign citizens from eligible countries can land with an e-tourist visa are Jaipur, Amritsar, Gaya, Lucknow, Trichy, Varanasi and Ahmedabad. The airports have been chosen due to the large number of foreign tourists they receive on account of their proximity to major tourist spots.

The e-visa scheme presently covers 45 countries and can be availed across nine international airports. With the expansion of the scheme by June, the list will go up to 76 countries and 16 airports.

Govt changes name of visa-on-arrival scheme to e-tourist visa

Among the countries whose citizens will now be eligible for e-visas are Argentina, Armenia, Aruba, Belgium, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Hungary, Ireland, Jamaica, Malaysia, Malta, Mongolia, Mozambique, the Netherlands, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Surinam, Sweden, Tanzania, East Timor, Turks & Caicos Islands, the UK, Uruguay and Venezuela. Finance minister Arun Jaitley had in the Budget 2015-16 proposed extension of e-visa scheme to 150 countries.

ETA-enabled Tourist Visa on Arrival Scheme Renamed as e-Tourist Visa

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has decided to change the name of the scheme, ‘Tourist Visa on Arrival-Electronic Travel Authorization’ (TVoA-ETA) to ‘e-Tourist Visa’ (eTV), with effect from today. The extension of the scheme to more countries and airports will be in a phased manner, in order to avoid any confusion, as per a PIB release.

The Centre has decided for a name change because the name TVoA-ETA was creating confusion among tourists. Tourists presumed that the visa is being granted on arrival, while the fact is that in the present system, the pre-authorisation of visa to foreigners is being given prior to travel. The Home Affairs Ministry had also received requests for name change from some Indian embassies.

A committee of officers from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, and Bureau of Immigration (BoI) was formed for the formulation of a new name for the scheme. A contest was also conducted on mygov.in, inviting suggestions on the name of the scheme.

Keeping in view the application process and purpose of the scheme, the committee had suggested e-Tourist Visa as the appropriate new name for the scheme.

The Government of India had launched TVoA-ETA on November 27, 2014 for 43 countries at nine airports, to facilitate short-duration international travellers. Since the launch of the scheme, 110,000 visas have been issued by the government under this scheme.

How it started?

It all started in October 2013 when India thought of initiating the process of giving access of visa-on-arrival to few more countries so finalized a list of 40 more nations. In January 2014, plans were confirmed by the ministers of India. The also decided to reduce the sixteen different types of visa categories to mere three: work, business and tourism. After many discussions over the possibility and consequences of the Visa on Arrival, finally in February 2014 the Indian government announced the approval of visa-on-arrival for up to 180 countries. It was possible mainly due to the new Immigration, Visa and Foreigners' Registration and Tracking (IVFRT) system. This system was not about the typical visa on arrival which used to create clutter at the airports, but it was a completely online computerized system based on online applications following the models of Australian Electronic Travel Authority system.

5th February 2014 the Indian Government decided to introduce visa-on-arrival to tourists from 180 countries. Challenges such as technical implementation and setting up the website for applications, were expected to take about 6 months and the government authorities were hopeful of bringing it in place before the tourist season starting October 2014. Prospective visitors will have to apply online by filling up an application form. They could pay the fee online as well and the electronic version of the visa (ETA) should be granted within 3 days. The program was supposed to be applicable at all international airports. Finally on 27th November 2014 the Indian Government officially announced the ETA facilities for 40 countries for now. The work is still going on to extend this facility to many other countries which is expected to happen in near future.

Citizens of the following countries and territories who hold ordinary passports are eligible to obtain the ETA (except for those who are of Pakistani origin) which allows them to obtain visa on arrival.
